Town Hall: Farm & Food Business Development (Virtual)

Over the past decade, Iowa has seen the loss of many small and residence farms, even as midsize and corporate operations expanded. Programs such as the Regional Food System Infrastructure (RFSI) grant, Choose Iowa Value-Added Grants, and federal initiatives like LFPA and LFS have provided critical support for equipment, infrastructure, and market development. These investments have allowed more Iowa-grown food to reach schools, grocery stores, and communities, but large gaps remain.

On October 21, 2025, at 6:30 p.m., the Iowa Food System Coalition and partners will host a statewide virtual discussion on how investment in farm and food businesses strengthens Iowa’s economy and food security. The event is open to legislators, legislative candidates, media, and the general public, and will feature voices from farmers, food hubs, meat processors, and rural grocery stores.

Speakers include:

  • Clint Miller, Freeman Foods — Wellman, Iowa

  • Will Friedrichsen, Friedrichsen Meat Company — Sutherland, Iowa

  • Michelle Kenyon, Field to Family Food Hub — Iowa City, Iowa

  • Mari Hunt-Wassink, Black Earth Gardens — Cedar Rapids, Iowa

  • Carmen Black, SunDog Farm — Solon, Iowa

  • Ashley Recknor, Purple Ribbon Beef — Britt, Iowa

  • Francois Hakizimana, Life Hope Farm — Earlham, Iowa

Moderated by Tommy Hexter, Iowa Farmers Union.
